There is a growing trend within general dentistry that stresses the importance of soft tissues health. When found at early stages of development, oral cancer has an 80 to 90% survival rate but, sadly, the majority of cases are found in the later stages. Approximately 45% of those diagnosed in the late stages die five years after diagnosis, and those who do survive are more susceptible to treatment-related illnesses. The VELscope is a highly effective aid for discovering and defining the extent of a wide range of mucosal abnormalities, including oral cancer. More importantly, VELscope helps us identify problems before they can be seen under ordinary white-light conditions.
